Train it at home
The 10-second mistake reset
Every player makes mistakes. The tough ones are back in the game before the other team celebrates. Teach this, then practice it with the breathing timer below.
1
Flush it
A physical cue: wipe the hands on the shorts, tap the shin guard, or clap once. The body tells the brain the play is over.
2
One slow breath
In through the nose, long breath out through the mouth. The long exhale is what slows the heart.
3
Next play words
Three words or fewer, chosen ahead of time: "Next ball." "Eyes up." "Win the next one."
Box breathing
Ready
Breathe in 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4.
Practice before game day
- Do four rounds of box breathing before bed the week of a big game.
- Pick next-play words together and write them on tape inside a shin guard or wristband.
- At practice, coaches can call "reset" after any mistake and watch for the cue.
- Praise the reset, not just the result: "Loved how fast you got back."
If a player feels panicky, dizzy or short of breath often, see their doctor. Breathing drills do not replace care.
